It was almost one in the morning when we pulled into his parents’ driveway. As quietly as we could so we couldn’t wake up his folks, we carried Neil’s armload of shopping bags into the house and set them in his room.
Back out in the hall between our rooms, he turned to me. “You know, I actually had a good time today.” He smiled. “The morning started off kind of rough, but it turned out okay.”
“Yeah, it did.” I returned the smile. “But after all that, it was a lot of fun.”
We held each other’s gazes but didn’t say anything. With only the faint light from his room illuminating his face, I knew what I wanted to say—hell, what I wanted to do—and I was afraid if I tried to come up with something benign and casual, all that would come out was do you know how long I’ve wanted to kiss you?
“Well, um…” He paused, clearing his throat. “I guess I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Right. Yeah.”
Neither of us moved.
Then Neil said, “Thanks for coming along while I busted out of here for a while.”
“Anytime,” I said.
His smile faltered slightly, and then he stepped closer and put his arms around me. I closed my eyes as I hugged him.
“Good night,” he whispered.
“Good night.”
He loosened his embrace, and we started to separate.
Then our eyes met. And locked.
My heart stopped.
He swept his tongue across his lips, and damn it, he may as well have done a sweep kick across my legs for as useful as my knees suddenly were.
“We should…” His eyes flicked from mine to my mouth and back. “This…”
I gulped. “We should get some sleep.” I leaned closer anyway.
“We should.” He neared me by a fraction of an inch. “But I…”
“Neil…” I couldn’t resist and drew him nearer to me. Our lips almost brushed when I whispered, “We said we wouldn’t do this again.”
“That was a long time ago.” His voice shook.
“I know, but it…” God, I couldn’t breathe, and to hell with forming words.
“Fuck…” He touched his forehead to mine. “Jeremy…”
I managed to pull in a breath. “Just tell me what you—”
He kissed me.
This wasn’t a tentative kiss like the ones that had gotten us started in the past. He kissed me now like he meant it, and I didn’t hesitate to pull him even closer, sliding a hand into his hair as he slipped his tongue past my lips. The only sounds were our sharp, rapid breathing and the rustle of our parkas. It was all I could do not to shove his jacket over his shoulders and onto the floor where it belonged. One layer down…
But I kept one hand in his hair and the other on the back of his neck and let his kiss consume me the way no kiss but his ever had.
Our lips separated just enough for him to slur, “I don’t know if I ever told you this, but you are an amazing kisser.”
“You’re one to talk,” I whispered and silenced any answer he might have had with another kiss.
